Long COVID symptoms, healthcare use, and recovery over 4 years in 3,590 people

Updated

Abstract

Only 33.4% of individuals with long covid achieved recovery to >75% of their best health by discharge.

  • 3590 individuals with long covid were followed up for a median of 136 days since first assessment.
  • Dominant symptoms included fatigue (78.7%), breathlessness (68.1%), and brain fog (53.5%).
  • Vaccination status was linked to faster recovery, with vaccinated individuals having a higher recovery hazard ratio.
  • Higher fatigue severity, myalgia, and dysautonomic symptoms were associated with lower recovery rates.
  • Secondary care healthcare utilisation was high, with reduced emergency department attendances in non-hospitalised patients compared to the prereferral period.
