Direct brain stimulation changes fluid exchange between brain and spinal fluid in mice

Abstract

Post-tDCS, an increased CSF tracer influx was observed, indicating modulation of CSF-ISF exchange.

  • tDCS is associated with an enhancement of the brain's metabolic waste efflux.
  • EEG recordings indicated an increase in delta wave activity following tDCS.
  • No significant change in aquaporin 4 expression was detected 30 minutes after tDCS.
  • In IPR2 knockout mice, there was no alteration in CSF-ISF exchange or delta wave activity post-tDCS.
  • These findings suggest that tDCS may influence brain clearance mechanisms through astrocytic signaling.
