Gene expression differences between male and female reproductive organs of the crucifix crab

Abstract

80.9 million clean reads were obtained from the testis of the crucifix crab, Charybdis feriatus.

  • High throughput sequencing identified 86,433 unigenes from the testis and ovary of C. feriatus.
  • Approximately 43% of these unigenes were successfully annotated to various biological databases.
  • A comparison of testis and ovary libraries revealed 27,636 differentially expressed genes.
  • Candidate genes related to sex determination and differentiation include vasa, pgds, and hsp90.
  • The study also detected 61,929 and 77,473 single nucleotide polymorphisms in testis and ovary, respectively.
