Gene activity in enlarged prostate reveals key processes in tissue growth and resistance to 5-alpha reductase inhibitors

Updated

Abstract

A total of 377 differentially expressed genes were identified in benign prostatic hyperplasia tissue samples from patients who failed medical therapy compared to controls.

  • Transcriptomic analysis revealed 3377 differentially expressed genes in surgical benign prostatic hyperplasia tissue compared to incidental benign prostatic hyperplasia tissue.
  • In patients receiving 5α-reductase inhibitors, 361 genes were significantly altered compared to those on no therapy or alpha-blockers.
  • Deconvolution analysis indicated increased levels of immune and prostate cells in patients with surgical benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • Glucocorticoids induced 369 differentially expressed genes associated with early prostatic growth in 3D culture.
  • Biological processes related to growth and differentiation, such as chromatin modification and mitochondrial function, were identified in the analysis.
  • Signaling pathways involved in inflammation and development were clustered, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
