Abstract

Local administration of TRPV1 antagonists into the lateral habenula reduced hyperalgesia, anxiety, and relapse-like drinking in alcohol-withdrawn rats.

  • TRPV1 channel antagonists inhibited glutamatergic transmission in the lateral habenula.
  • Chronic alcohol withdrawal increased the frequency of excitatory signals and neuron firing in the habenula.
  • In alcohol-withdrawn rats, the TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine showed a greater inhibitory effect on excitatory transmission compared to Naïve rats.
  • TRPV1 activation by capsaicin enhanced excitatory transmission less in alcohol-withdrawn rats than in Naïve rats.
  • Intra-habenula infusion of TRPV1 antagonists was associated with reduced alcohol consumption and improved emotional states in alcohol-withdrawn rats.
