Abstract
Transplanting older organs into younger recipients is associated with a 30-day increase in senescent cells and impaired physical and cognitive capacities.
- Older donor organs contain senescent cells that may influence the health of younger transplant recipients.
- Augmented frequencies of senescent cells were observed in various tissues of younger recipients after receiving old organs.
- Transplantation led to compromised physical performance and impaired spatial learning and memory abilities in younger mice.
- Elevated levels of specific factors linked to cellular aging were detected in the systemic circulation of recipients.
- Injections of mitochondrial DNA replicated the aging effects observed from age-mismatched organ transplants.
- Using senolytic treatments on older donor animals reduced harmful mitochondrial DNA release and improved outcomes in younger recipients.
