Triggers of Deadly Seizures Caused by New Synthetic Stimulant Drugs

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Seizures after synthetic cathinone or phenethylamine intoxication often occurred with monoaminergic toxicity, but treatable brain and metabolic complications also appeared in some cases.

Evidence

This systematic review descriptively synthesized 42 detailed human intoxication cases from 34 English-language reports published from 2003 to 2024.

Caveat

The evidence comes from published case reports with likely reporting bias and cannot estimate true seizure incidence or prove each proposed trigger.
