Abstract
Out of 100 food samples tested, 14 were found to contain bufotenine, with one sample at a concentration of 7.6 mg/kg.
- A new method was developed using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) to detect tryptamines in food.
- The method can accurately quantify psilocin, bufotenine, and psilocybin with limits of detection ranging from 0.4 to 0.6 µg/kg.
- The recoveries of the tryptamines were between 94.3% and 113.7%, indicating high accuracy in complex food matrices.
- Bufotenine was identified as naturally present in Zanthoxylum armatum DC. and Zanthoxylum Bungeanum Maxim., with concentrations ranging from 23.8 to 885.0 mg/kg in tested samples.
- The findings highlight potential risks associated with illegal additives in food, particularly from newly emerging sources.
