Ultrasound boosts ketamine's effects on brain activity

Abstract

SonoKet uncaging with focused ultrasound (FUS) resulted in significant increases in neurotransmitter levels in targeted brain regions.

  • FUS alone did not produce significant changes in neurotransmitter concentrations or affect the distribution of free ketamine.
  • Free ketamine generally elicited a greater neurotransmitter response when combined with FUS.
  • SonoKet (0.75 mg/kg) combined with FUS led to increased levels of glutamate, GABA, and serotonin in the targeted region.
  • Dopamine levels increased in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) with frontolimbic SonoKet uncaging.
  • The effects of SonoKet uncaging were similar to or greater than those observed with higher doses of free ketamine.
