Ultrasound helps blood thinners tirofiban and heparin work better together to break down blood clots in the lab

Updated

Abstract

Ultrasound enhanced blood clot dissolution by 60.8% with heparin compared to immersion alone.

  • Non-ultrasound treatments with heparin, tirofiban, and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) did not improve clot disruption compared to normal saline.
  • Ultrasound application significantly increased clot dissolution across all tested conditions, with the greatest improvement seen with tirofiban and heparin.
  • The combination of tirofiban or heparin with ultrasound resulted in significantly greater clot dissolution than ultrasound with saline.
  • Ultrasound applied with tPA or Optison did not significantly enhance clot dissolution beyond the effect of ultrasound with saline.
  • This study indicates that ultrasound can effectively augment the effects of certain thrombolytic agents on clot lysis.
