Urban environment's effects on the pineal gland and body clock genes in tree sparrows

Abstract

Urban birds show lower expression of Aanat in the pineal gland and reduced plasma melatonin levels compared to rural birds.

  • Circadian rhythm period, activity duration, and total activity count did not differ between urban and rural birds under constant light conditions.
  • Daily variations in plasma melatonin levels were measured at six time points, revealing lower levels in urban birds.
  • Expression levels of Aanat, Mel1A, and Mel1B, indicating melatonin biosynthesis and action, were found to be lower in urban birds.
  • Differential expression of clock genes was observed in the hypothalamus, pineal gland, and retina of urban birds.
  • Alterations in melatonin biosynthesis and clock gene expression may lead to disruptions in the internal timing of urban wild animals.
