Link Between Daily Melatonin Patterns in Urine and Bone Breakdown Levels in Blind Women

Updated

Abstract

Most blind women (N = 32/35, 91%) exhibited a significant 24-hour rhythm of melatonin levels.

  • A significant 24-hour rhythm of the bone resorption marker NTx was observed in 57% of the blind women studied.
  • No significant differences were found in the proportion of women with NTx rhythms based on visual light perception, entrainment, or reproductive status.
  • There was no correlation between the peak timings of melatonin and NTx among participants who had significant rhythms in both metabolites.
  • Perimenopausal women with light perception showed a significantly higher NTx area under the curve compared to others.
  • Findings do not support a direct influence of light, melatonin, or reproductive status on NTx rhythms.
