Gut bacteria influence a gene active in nerve cells linking digestive hormone-producing cells

Updated

Abstract

The Uts2b gene is expressed in a microbiota-dependent manner in nodose-petrosal ganglion neurons.

  • Uts2b encodes a neuropeptide, urotensin 2B (UTS2B), whose function remains unknown.
  • Expression of Uts2b in NPG neurons is induced by the selective agonist AR420626.
  • Cholecystokinin (CCK) significantly increases Uts2b expression in NPG neurons.
  • Approximately 25% of CCK-A-expressing NPG neurons also express Uts2b.
  • Nerve fibers of Uts2b-expressing NPG neurons make direct contact with CCK-expressing enteroendocrine cells.
