How COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters Affect Key Immune Cell Responses in Thai Healthcare Workers

Updated

Abstract

The first booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines increased B-lymphocyte counts by 4.2-9.0-fold compared to the primary series.

  • Both Sinovac (CoronaVac) and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines increased anti-spike antibodies, neutralizing antibodies, and .
  • The study tracked immune responses over two years in healthcare personnel vaccinated against COVID-19 in Thailand.
  • First booster doses significantly raised SARS-CoV-2 antigen-specific antibody-secreting B-lymphocyte counts but had little effect on T-lymphocyte counts.
  • No significant differences in B- and T-lymphocyte counts were observed after subsequent boosters compared to the first booster.
  • Initial booster doses were important for increasing B-lymphocyte counts, while T-lymphocyte levels remained high.
  • Additional booster doses helped restore B- and T-lymphocyte levels after immune responses decreased over time.
