Using valproic acid, valproate, and divalproex to maintain treatment in bipolar disorder

Abstract

Six randomised controlled trials with 876 participants evaluated the long-term efficacy of valproate in bipolar disorder treatment.

  • Valproate was more effective than placebo in preventing study withdrawal due to mood episodes.
  • No significant difference in efficacy was found between valproate and lithium.
  • Valproate treatment resulted in fewer participants dropping out compared to both placebo and lithium.
  • Combination therapy of valproate and lithium was more effective in preventing relapse than valproate alone.
  • Differences in adverse events were observed, with valproate linked to increased sedation and infection, while lithium was associated with gastrointestinal issues.
