Vanillin reduces memory problems caused by disrupted body clocks through changes in gut bacteria and tryptophan processing

Updated

Abstract

Orally administered vanillin improved cognitive performance in a mouse model of circadian disruption.

  • Circadian disruption impaired spatial learning and recognition memory in mice.
  • Vanillin corrected abnormal changes in tryptophan-related metabolites, including tryptophan, kynurenine, and kynurenic acid.
  • Vanillin modulated the composition and diversity of gut microbiota.
  • Intestinal barrier function was enhanced and immune homeostasis improved with vanillin treatment.
  • Vanillin regulated proteins in the hippocampus related to neuronal and synaptic function while reducing astrocyte activation.
