Protecting the Heart by Preventing Blood Vessel Aging with GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are associated with improved vascular regenerative progenitor cell flux in type 2 diabetes.

  • GLP-1RAs have shown a class-wide reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events in various trials.
  • Recent findings suggest GLP-1RAs may be effective in treating atherosclerosis, heart failure, and peripheral artery disease.
  • There is emerging interest in the potential of GLP-1RAs for chronic kidney disease management.
  • The use of GLP-1RAs may address three key aspects of vascular aging: stem cell exhaustion, altered communication between cells, and chronic inflammation.
  • Imbalances in blood cell formation during cardiometabolic diseases could worsen chronic inflammation and speed up vascular aging.
