How well vilazodone works as a new antidepressant for major depression

Updated

Abstract

Vilazodone 40 mg/day resulted in statistically significant improvements in depression symptoms in two 8-week trials.

  • Patients treated with vilazodone showed a greater reduction in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) scores compared to those receiving placebo, with treatment differences of -3.2 in RCT-1 and -2.5 in RCT-2.
  • Clinical Global Impressions-Improvement scores indicated more significant improvement with vilazodone than placebo, with differences of -0.4 in RCT-1 and -0.3 in RCT-2.
  • Response rates for MADRS were higher in vilazodone-treated patients (40.4% in RCT-1 and 43.7% in RCT-2) compared to placebo (28.1% in RCT-1 and 30.3% in RCT-2).
  • The efficacy of vilazodone was consistent across various demographic and clinical subgroups.
  • In a long-term study, average MADRS scores improved from 29.9 at baseline to 11.4 at week 8, 8.2 at week 24, and 7.1 at week 52.
