Vitamin C may reduce air pollution-related thyroid problems and cell cleanup imbalance by restoring calcium balance between cell compartments

Updated

Abstract

PM2.5 exposure compromised thyroid function and structure in female rats.

  • Calcium imbalance driven by endoplasmic reticulum stress is linked to PM2.5-induced thyroid injury.
  • Altered expression and distribution of key proteins at mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes were observed.
  • Increased mitochondrial calcium overload and reactive oxygen species were associated with thyroid damage.
  • Inhibition of ER stress and mitochondrial division reduced cellular damage from PM2.5 exposure.
  • Vitamin C showed potential in mitigating some alterations caused by PM2.5.
