Using Wearable Heart Rate Sensors to Track Blood Vessel Narrowing and Predict Pain Crises in Sickle Cell Disease

Updated

Abstract

A total of 131 nocturnal PPG recordings were made using a wearable wristband device.

  • Wearable wristband devices enabled continuous monitoring of peripheral autonomic vasoreactivity.
  • Significant within-night and night-to-night variability in vasoconstriction parameters suggests dynamic changes in autonomic function.
  • The maximum overnight correlation of vasoconstriction parameters reached 0.82 for the finger sensor and 0.69 for the wristband sensor.
  • PPG amplitude coefficient of variation (PPGampCV) significantly correlated with the magnitude of vasoconstriction (Mvasoc) across devices.
  • Cross-validation showed statistically significant correlations of PPGampCV between wristband and fingertip sensors on all 9 nights monitored.
