Weight control habits of top college athletes

Abstract

Among Division I NCAA athletes, 61% of females attempted to lose weight in less weight-sensitive sports compared to 22% of males.

  • Weight loss attempts were similar between genders in weight-sensitive sports (50% of females vs. 60% of males).
  • In less weight-sensitive sports, 65% of males attempted to gain weight, while only 4% of females did.
  • No significant difference in weight control knowledge was found between athletes attempting or not attempting to lose weight.
  • Common maladaptive behaviors for weight loss included skipping meals and increased exercise.
