Patterns of Working Hours in Finland’s Retail Sector Based on Official Records

Payroll data from over 12,000 employees in the Finnish retail sector reveals significant differences in working hour characteristics between part-time and full-time workers.

• Morning shifts were more common among full-time employees (48-51%) compared to part-time employees (27-30%).
• Part-time employees frequently worked evening shifts (43-46%), while full-time employees had evening shifts only 26% of the time.
• No significant differences in working hours were found based on sex.
• Minor age group differences in working hours were observed, limited to part-time employees.
• The new codification for working hour data may facilitate the identification of individual differences in working hour characteristics.
