New insights into how the yeast Atg1 protein complex evolved

The in budding yeast contains Atg101, which is associated with a rod-shaped Atg17 scaffold.

  • Budding yeast species can contain both Atg29/Atg31 and Atg101 in their Atg1 complex.
  • Structural modeling and negative stain electron microscopy suggest that Atg101 alters the shape of Atg17 to a rod form.
  • The Atg13 HORMA domain may function as a stabilizing cap, indicating a potential alternative role for Atg101.
  • The divergence in Atg1 complex composition between budding and fission yeast reflects different evolutionary paths.
