Zinc may trigger cell cleaning by controlling a key protein after brain blood flow injury

Updated

Abstract

Zinc chelation significantly attenuated the increase in beclin1 expression following cerebral ischemia/reperfusion.

  • Beclin1 expression was significantly increased after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion.
  • Zinc accumulation may activate autophagy through histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6).
  • Inhibition of HDAC6 reduced beclin1 expression and alleviated brain injury.
  • Zinc acts upstream of HDAC6, as chelating zinc decreased HDAC6 expression.
  • A potential interaction between HDAC6 and α-tubulin could regulate autophagy-related processes.
