A degradable pure zinc membrane that supports new bone growth for guided bone repair: lab and animal studies

Abstract

Pure zinc membranes with 300 µm pores demonstrated osteogenic capability comparable to titanium membranes.

  • Three types of pure zinc membranes were developed: without pores, with 300 µm pores, and with 1000 µm pores.
  • Pure zinc membranes exhibited better mechanical properties than resorbable polymers but had limitations in formability and degradation rate.
  • In vitro tests showed that the 300 µm pore configuration had favorable results for cell viability.
  • The in vivo study utilized a rat model with critical-sized bone defects to evaluate the membranes' performance.
  • The 300 µm pore zinc membrane displayed significant osteogenic capability, suggesting it may be a viable option for guided bone regeneration.
