3D Printed Microneedle Patch for Delivering and Measuring Melatonin from Body Fluid

Abstract

15 ± 2 µl of interstitial fluid was aspirated by the microneedle patch after 10 minutes of application in a rat model.

  • The microneedle patch was developed using a 3D printing technique that allows for the creation of a pyramidal array.
  • Melatonin concentrations in interstitial fluid varied from 81 ± 13 to 178 ± 11 pg/ml during the light-dark cycle.
  • The melatonin loaded microneedle patch increased melatonin concentration by 4.6-fold in interstitial fluid and sixfold in serum when 20 µg was applied.
  • Two types of patches were tested: one for collecting interstitial fluid to analyze melatonin and another for delivering melatonin.
