A blood test can now estimate your internal clock time using just 60 proteins

Your body keeps its own clock — and it turns out your blood knows exactly what time it is.

A new wave of research is making it harder to ignore how much circadian timing shapes cancer, metabolism, mental health, and lung function.

Your Blood Can Tell Scientists What Time Your Body Thinks It Is 🕐

  • Researchers analyzed 3,228 plasma proteins from UK Biobank participants and found that 58% show meaningful variation across the day — a much larger share than most expected.
  • A machine-learning model trained on that data can predict what time a blood sample was drawn with reasonable accuracy, and a stripped-down version using just ~60 proteins still holds up.
  • The team also defined a new measure called "circadian acceleration" — essentially how far your internal clock drifts from the population average. It's heritable, tracks with whether you're a night owl or shift worker, and shifts when your environment changes.

Why it matters: This is a scalable way to measure circadian timing in large populations without melatonin tests or sleep labs — which opens the door to studying how clock misalignment drives disease at a scale that wasn't previously possible.

Bedroom Light at Night Is Linked to Depression in Kids — Especially Girls 💡

Circadian Disruption in Colorectal Cancer Goes Deeper Than Clock Genes 🔬

  • A systematic review of 43 studies found consistent links between dysregulation of clock genes — including PER1, BMAL1, and TIMELESS — and tumor proliferation, immune evasion, metabolic reprogramming, and treatment resistance in colorectal cancer.
  • The authors frame this as a "Tumor Temporal State": a systems-level condition, not just a gene expression quirk, that touches nearly every dimension of how the cancer behaves.

The week's research converges on one uncomfortable idea: circadian misalignment isn't a lifestyle footnote — it's embedded in cancer biology, lung disease, metabolic dysfunction, and child mental health. The unresolved tension is measurement: without scalable, validated tools to assess individual circadian timing in clinical settings, most of these associations remain observational and untranslated.
