5-HTP supplements and their effects on sleep quality and gut bacteria in older adults

Updated

Abstract

5-HTP supplementation led to a significant improvement in sleep quality for poor sleepers, with a decrease in subjective global sleep score by 2.80 ± 1.10 min.

  • Poor sleepers who received 5-HTP showed a notable improvement in subjective sleep quality compared to the control group.
  • Serum serotonin levels increased after 12 weeks of 5-HTP supplementation.
  • 5-HTP supplementation was associated with enhanced diversity in gut microbiota among poor sleepers.
  • An increase in the relative abundance of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids was observed in the gut of poor sleepers taking 5-HTP.
