6-Gingerol boosts insulin release from insulin-producing cells without increasing gut hormone secretion

Updated

Abstract

6-Gingerol did not stimulate GLP-1 secretion but potentiated insulin secretion in MIN6 β-cells through GLP-1 receptor mechanisms.

  • 6-Gingerol reduced GLP-1 secretion in STC-1 cells without affecting cell viability.
  • In MIN6 β-cells, insulin secretion was enhanced in a bell-shaped manner by 6-Gingerol.
  • This insulin secretion effect was blocked by two different GLP-1 receptor antagonists and by inhibiting protein kinase A.
  • A rise in cAMP was observed in MIN6 cells, indicating a GLP-1 receptor-dependent mechanism.
  • MIN6 cells expressed the GLP-1 receptor transcript, confirming the presence of a functional receptor.
