Faster biological aging and shorter DNA-based telomere length in muscle loss with obesity

Abstract

Sarcopenic obesity is associated with accelerated aging and shorter DNA methylation telomere length.

  • Sarcopenic obesity showed higher intrinsic and extrinsic epigenetic age acceleration compared to other groups.
  • Obesity alone was linked to increased estimates from several epigenetic aging clocks.
  • Sarcopenia without obesity did not show the same associations with biological aging indicators.
  • The findings suggest that having excess fat and low muscle mass may worsen age-related decline.
  • Results are based on a small sample size of 30 older women.
