Early alcohol before trauma worsens PTSD-like symptoms in rats, which early nasal ketamine may reverse

Abstract

Rats administered ethanol 4 hours before trauma showed a higher prevalence of PTSD-like phenotypes at 7 days compared to those given saline.

  • Ethanol exposure prior to trauma may increase the risk of developing PTSD-like symptoms in rats.
  • Acute ethanol exposure is associated with significant changes in hippocampal CA1 dendritic structure.
  • Combined exposure to ethanol and trauma correlates with altered levels of BDNF and NPY, and increased HCN1.
  • An early post-trauma treatment with ketamine may reduce PTSD-like behaviors and dendritic atrophy in ethanol-exposed rats.
  • Pre-trauma ethanol exposure may affect hippocampal circuits linked to stress responses and plasticity.
