Suckling Quickly Increases Neuropeptide Y in Two Feeding Control Areas of the Hypothalamus

Abstract

NPY mRNA levels in the caudal hypothalamic arcuate nucleus approximately doubled after 24 hours of suckling.

  • Suckling activates NPY neurons in specific areas of the hypothalamus.
  • The rostral portion of the arcuate nucleus showed no change in NPY mRNA levels during the suckling period examined.
  • Resuckling for as little as 3 hours increased NPY mRNA expression in cells near the dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus.
  • Non-resuckled control animals did not exhibit NPY expression in the targeted regions.
