Sleep Study Results Before and After Tonsil and Adenoid Removal in Children with Breathing Problems During Sleep

Updated

Abstract

The mean preoperative apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was 27.5, significantly higher than the mean postoperative AHI of 3.5 (P < .001).

  • Adenotonsillectomy led to a significant reduction in AHI values for children with obstructive sleep apnea.
  • The percentage of children achieving normal sleep study results after surgery ranged from 71% to 90%, depending on the criteria used.
  • All children with a preoperative AHI of 10 or lower had resolution of obstructive sleep apnea post-surgery.
  • Persistent obstructive sleep apnea was observed in 36% of children with severe preoperative OSA.
  • Postoperative quality of life, measured by the OSA-18 survey, showed significant improvement (P < .001), though correlation with respiratory parameters was poor.
