When and Why Adults Stop Using Lifestyle and Mental Health Apps

Updated

Abstract

A median of 70% of users discontinued health app use within the first 100 days.

  • App abandonment displayed a curvilinear pattern, with sharp declines in usage shortly after acquisition.
  • Different app domains showed varying abandonment rates, with alcohol and smoking apps abandoned more quickly than those for physical activity and mental health.
  • Twenty-two unique reasons for app abandonment were identified, categorized into technical issues, privacy concerns, poor user experience, content and features, time and financial costs, and evolving user needs.
  • The findings suggest a need for improved understanding of user engagement over time and the factors leading to app abandonment.
