Pregnancy problems linked to schizophrenia in women: A review and combined analysis

Abstract

Women with schizophrenia have a 26.0% prevalence of cesarean sections during childbirth.

  • Labor induction occurs in 24.0% of pregnancies involving women with schizophrenia.
  • 10.5% of these pregnancies result in babies classified as small for gestational age.
  • Gestational diabetes mellitus is present in 9.2% of women with schizophrenia during pregnancy.
  • There is an increased risk of preterm birth (9.1%) and low birth weight (7.8%) in this population.
  • Adverse outcomes such as neonatal mortality (0.3%) and birth defects (5.4%) are also associated with pregnancies in women with schizophrenia.
