Autophagy

Breaking protein clumps helps their removal by cell cleaning systems

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Protein aggregate fragmentation appears to be a required step that lets amorphous aggregates be cleared by aggrephagy.

Evidence

This was a mechanistic cell-biology study of aggregate clearance, showing that a DNAJB6-HSPA/HSP70-HSPH1/HSP110 chaperone module and 19S proteasome regulatory particles fragment and compact aggregates, including disease-related HTT aggregates.

Caveat

The abstract describes molecular requirements for aggregate processing rather than organism-level disease outcomes or therapeutic testing.
