Air pollution linked to lung function and lung scan problems 3 to 15 months after COVID

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Personal PM2.5 exposure was linked to later CT airway abnormalities in long-COVID patients, while residential pollution measures were not.

Evidence

A 95-patient long-COVID outpatient cohort assessed spirometry, DLCO, chest CT, geospatial residential pollution, residential PM2.5, and personal PM2.5 at 3-6 months post-infection, with 38 abnormal cases followed about nine months later.

Caveat

The positive signal came from the smaller follow-up subgroup and personal exposure measure, with no first-visit associations for assigned or measured residential air pollution.
