Long-term air pollution and living near traffic linked to heart artery disease marker in China

Abstract

The mean coronary artery calcium (CAC) score among 8867 participants was 91.4 (SD 322.2) Agatston units.

  • Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with a 27.2% increase in CAC scores per 30 μg/m3 increase.
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure is linked to a 24.5% increase in CAC scores per 20 μg/m3 increase.
  • Odds of detectable CAC increase by 28% for each 30 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5.
  • Severe CAC (Agatston score >400) odds increase by 59% for each 30 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5.
  • Associations with CAC scores are stronger in male, elderly, and diabetic participants.
