Akkermansia muciniphila helps protect against memory problems caused by cadmium through gut bacteria

Updated

Abstract

Oral supplementation with Akkermansia muciniphila prevented cognitive impairment in mice exposed to cadmium for 9 weeks.

  • Cognitive protection was mediated through gut-brain signaling rather than affecting brain cadmium accumulation.
  • Supplementation with A. muciniphila preserved lactobacillus species that correlated positively with cognitive performance.
  • Intestinal tight-junction integrity was restored, particularly in the ileum, indicating improved gut health.
  • Cytokine dysregulation in the serum caused by cadmium exposure was normalized with A. muciniphila supplementation.
  • Colonic branched-chain fatty acids emerged as potential gut-brain mediators of cognitive performance.
