Analysis of Alcohol Harm Reduction Ads: Topics, Goals, Emotions, Style, and Target Audiences

Abstract

A total of 110 individual ads from 72 different alcohol harm reduction campaigns were identified.

  • The main source countries for the ads were Australia (40%) and the United Kingdom (26%).
  • Short-term harms were the dominant topic for 52% of the ads, while only 10% focused on long-term harms.
  • 38% of ads aimed to motivate audiences to reduce alcohol consumption, and 33% encouraged responsible drinking behavior.
  • Only 10% of the ads mentioned low-risk drinking guidelines.
  • 87% of ads used dramatization as an execution style, and 74% employed a negative emotional tone.
  • 90% of ads appeared to target adults, with 36% specifically targeting young adults.
