Allergies, Long COVID, and Breathing Problems After Restrictions in Children

Abstract

Among 214 children with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, allergic status was associated with a 3.12-fold increased likelihood of Long COVID.

  • Allergic status did not significantly affect the overall risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • Severe acute infection was strongly linked to Long COVID, with an adjusted odds ratio of 6.84.
  • Complete vaccination was associated with a reduced risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.20.
  • No independent association was found between vaccination status and Long COVID among infected children.
  • Post-restriction, 90.1% of allergic children reported worsening allergic rhinitis, and 52.0% reported worsening asthma.
  • The incidence of bacterial and viral pharyngitis did not differ significantly between allergic and non-allergic children.
