Alpha2delta-1 in Specialized Hypothalamus Neurons Is Key to Controlling Blood Sugar and Fat Balance

Abstract

Mice lacking the α2δ-1 protein in specific neurons show glucose intolerance and altered lipid metabolism.

  • α2δ-1 regulates glucose and lipid balance in steroidogenic factor-1 (SF1) neurons of the ventromedial hypothalamus.
  • Deletions of α2δ-1 in SF1 neurons lead to decreased sympathetic output to metabolic tissues.
  • Alterations in metabolic parameters occur despite normal body weight regulation.
  • Changes include reduced firing rates of SF1 neurons and elevated levels of serotonin in circulation.
  • Normal calcium currents but reduced excitatory signals in mutant SF1 neurons suggest a role for α2δ-1 beyond calcium channel function.
