Health Care Costs and Use After Gastric Bypass Compared to Sleeve Gastrectomy

Updated

Abstract

Matched cohorts included 3049 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and 3251 patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).

  • There were no significant differences in total ambulatory health care costs, office visit costs, or radiology costs between SG and RYGB over 4 years.
  • Patients who underwent SG had significantly higher prescription costs in year 4, averaging $852.8 per patient.
  • In year 4, 42.5% of patients who underwent SG filled cardiometabolic medications, indicating a higher need for these prescriptions.
  • Early after surgery, SG patients had fewer specialist visits and lower laboratory costs compared to RYGB patients.
  • Findings suggest a potential trade-off between the greater cardiometabolic health improvements associated with RYGB and the related costs.
