Four-Year Health Care Costs After Two Types of Weight-Loss Surgery: Gastric Bypass vs Sleeve Gastrectomy

Updated

Abstract

The 4-year cumulative health care costs for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy were not statistically significantly different, averaging $33,682 and $33,948, respectively.

  • No significant differences were found in all-cause mortality between RYGB and sleeve gastrectomy, with rates of 1.5% and 2.2%, respectively.
  • RYGB was associated with more frequent nonelective hospitalizations compared to sleeve gastrectomy (472 vs 339).
  • Patients undergoing RYGB required fewer subsequent bariatric procedures than those who had sleeve gastrectomy (9 vs 40).
  • A history of coronary artery disease was linked to a 35% increase in health care expenditures, chronic kidney disease to a 54% increase, and mental health admissions to a 67% increase.
