Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Changes in Health Care Use and Costs After Surgery in Canada

Updated

Abstract

Mean total health care expenditures per patient in the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) group increased by CAD $14,795 over 5 years post-procedure.

  • Total health care expenditures for the RYGB group rose from CAD $15,594 before surgery to CAD $30,389 after surgery.
  • In contrast, expenditures for the control group increased from CAD $16,109 to CAD $20,073 over the same period.
  • The overall difference-in-differences estimate indicates a net cost of RYGB of CAD $10,831 over 5 years.
  • Increased hospitalizations shortly after RYGB contributed significantly to the higher costs.
  • Expenditures stabilized in the third year post-surgery, with no statistically significant differences noted in years 4 and 5.
