Weight loss after two types of stomach surgery in people with severe obesity

Updated

Abstract

After 5 years, excess BMI loss was 61.1% for sleeve gastrectomy and 68.3% for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

  • Excess BMI loss did not significantly differ between the two procedures, with an absolute difference of -7.18%.
  • Gastric reflux remission occurred more frequently in patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (60.4%) compared to those with sleeve gastrectomy (25.0%).
  • Symptoms of gastric reflux worsened in 31.8% of patients after sleeve gastrectomy, compared to 6.3% after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
  • Reoperations or interventions were needed for 15.8% of patients after sleeve gastrectomy and 22.1% after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
  • Of the 217 enrolled patients, 205 (94.5%) completed the 5-year follow-up.
