Weight loss and health improvements after sleeve gastrectomy versus gastric bypass surgery: A review of 18 studies

Updated

Abstract

A meta-analysis of 20 studies involving 2917 participants found no significant difference in weight loss outcomes between Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

  • Both surgical procedures are associated with similar effectiveness in achieving excess weight loss and resolution of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy had fewer postoperative complications and lower reoperation rates compared to those receiving Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
  • Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass showed superior results in managing conditions such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
