Updated

Abstract

At 5 years, the estimated mean percentage excess weight loss was 49% after sleeve gastrectomy and 57% after gastric bypass.

  • Gastric bypass resulted in 8.2 percentage units more excess weight loss compared to sleeve gastrectomy.
  • Complete or partial remission of type 2 diabetes was observed in 37% after sleeve gastrectomy and 45% after gastric bypass.
  • Discontinuation of medication for hypertension occurred in 29% after sleeve gastrectomy versus 51% after gastric bypass.
  • No significant difference in quality of life was found between the two surgical methods.
  • The overall morbidity rate was 19% for sleeve gastrectomy and 26% for gastric bypass, with no treatment-related mortality.
