Amylin controls energy balance by acting on the brain's lateral dorsal tegmental area through GABA signaling

Updated

Abstract

Activation of lateral dorsal tegmental nucleus (LDTg) amylin receptors reduces body weight and food intake in a dose-dependent manner.

  • The amylin receptor complex is expressed in the LDTg, a region involved in regulating reward and feeding.
  • Salmon calcitonin, an amylin receptor agonist, decreases motivated feeding behaviors in addition to food intake.
  • Pharmacological and viral knockdown studies suggest that signaling through LDTg amylin receptors is important for managing energy balance.
  • Amylin receptors in the LDTg are found on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons, indicating a possible pathway for its effects.
  • Behavioral outcomes imply that GABA receptor signaling may contribute to the reduced food consumption following LDTg amylin receptor activation.
