Drugs Targeting Amylin Receptors for Treating Obesity

Updated

Abstract

Amylin receptor activators are currently being tested in clinical trials for the treatment of obesity.

  • Amylin, a 37-amino acid peptide hormone, regulates blood glucose and appetite by activating its receptors in the brain.
  • The amylin receptor is a complex formed by the calcitonin receptor and an accessory protein.
  • Recent advancements include mutations that enhance receptor affinity and a method for measuring selective amylin receptor activation.
  • Combination therapy using amylin analogs and other anti-obesity peptide drugs may reduce body weight more effectively than monotherapy.
  • Amylin receptor activators could have a more favorable adverse effect profile compared to GLP-1 receptor activators.
